The American Revolution brought forth a new nation with the promise of inherent,  ‘inalienable rights’. The United States Declaration of Independence, there are three examples of unalienable rights; ‘Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness’, a phrase which emphasizes individual liberty and economic entrepreneurship for every citizen. Without the brave men and women who have fought for this country, none of this would be possible. Keep reading for our tribute to them and more on how their efforts have helped to build this great nation we call home.

It’s a time for celebration and reflection; a time for peace and togetherness. Together we fight, together we rise! This great nation of ours has fought many hard-won battles. Not only on this day but every day forward, we thank you for your service, for our freedom and for the ability to take this country into the future.  We Became an Independent Nation.

From its emergence as an independent nation in 1776, the United States has always encouraged science and innovation. A unique combination of geographical, social, and economic factors have led to many of our biggest technological and industrial inventions, including the airplane, the computer, internet, the cellphone, the refrigerator, microwave and so many more….making us one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world!

We Adapted, Refined & Grew.

Being former British subjects, the United States had a strong foundation to build upon. Literate in English without the limitations of an aristocratic structure, we were able to adapt British institutions and ideas suit our new country, including courts, the rule of law, the right to vote, protection of property rights and others.  When the flow of supplies and industrial revolution products from Britain was cut off from America, it became the driving force for us to become self-reliant and develop our own goods rather than depending on Britain.

 Making Progress.

After the end of the American Revolution in 1783, the new government continued the strong property rights established under British rule. We established a rule of law necessary to protect those property rights. The idea of issuing patents was incorporated into Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution, authorizing Congress “to promote the progress of science and useful arts by securing, for limited times to authors and inventors, the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries.”

 The first U.S. Patent, signed by President George Washington, was issued on July 31, 1790, to a gentleman named Samuel Hopkins. Samuel has issued the first patent for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer.

 In June 2018, the U.S. issued Patent #10,000,000! Yes, that many! The Patent was issued to a Joseph Marron and Raytheon, for “Coherent LADAR Using Intra-Pixel Quadrature Detection,” which describes a method of bouncing lasers off of targets to figure out their range and velocity. Interesting right?

 In addition, we had remarkable economic and technological progress at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In every area, whether it was agricultural, industrial, technological, infrastructure, we made great strides and saw rapid progress. And we didn’t stop there….to this day, we continue to find new and innovative ways to break barriers and enhance the way we live in this great country.

 A Great Nation Today & Always

Being a free, independent nation changed us. We fought. We won. We failed. We succeeded. There were times of great hardship when hope was almost lost. There were times of victory when we celebrated together. In 2019, we take this history for granted.  We wake up and go about living our busy lives–working, taking care of our families–and we don’t stop to think of how we all got here. Today, we give thanks and celebrate our history. It has shaped us to be the great nation we are with Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for all.
